Life is all about making choices

Hi folks,
This is the first time i am writing a blog and its a pleasure for me to write about electives at our campus (IIIT- Bangalore). I have chosen this topic as many of the juniors keep on asking about the electives for their second semester.

First of all let me tell you one thing here. Irrespective of the electives chosen and the domain of work, every iiitbian manages to a draw a minimum package of 5-6lpa (at most within 1 year of graduation). This is what is quoted by one of our super senior when we were in the first semester. This figure puzzled us a lot but it seems to be true. So, i just wanna say you that we are here to build careers, not to make money. Money follows eventually.

The most obvious question which i am facing from juniors is the relation between electives and the respective job prospects. Jobs are every where, given you are some where (at least one step ahead) in the field of choice. We just have to be aware of the field, its algorithms, its basic concepts (I did not use the word “perfect” in place of aware here just because if you are perfect you should be in a position to build it). Remember one thing before making a choice, “It should be the first stage of your big dream”.

“What, if i go wrong?” is the obvious question which your heart puzzles you with. Here you must understand the fact that 90% of the people change their field within first 2 years of their job. Most of the times there is no correlation between the subjects chosen and the profession entered into. There is nothing panic about changing your profession but remember you will again be at the first stage of your big dream.

The next question which i am facing is about electronics(DSP and Embedded Systems) at iiitb. I would like to address this issue in my next blog but i would say that “Electronics is not just a subject in iiitb, its a religion”.

I know it must have created much confusion in your minds but hope it initiates your thought process and helps you making a good choice.

All the best,
